最愛の妻ジョーに先立たれ、スランプに陥ったベストセラー作家のマイク・ヌーナン。深い悲しみから立ち直ることができず、夜毎の悪夢に悩まされていた彼は、妻との思い出の地で人里離れた湖畔ダーク・スコア・レイクへ向かう。そこでしばしの療養をすることに決めたマイクは、偶然出会ったうら若き未亡人母子と親しくなる。次第にその傷を癒していくマイクだったが、彼が滞在していた別荘で数々の怪奇現象が起こり始め…。
